Navigation and Discovering Antarctica
Estrecho de Bransfield, Mar de la Flota : Bransfield Strait, Fleet Sea
Spanish: Estrecho de Bransfield, Mar de la Flota is a body of water about 100 kilometres / 60 miles wide extending for 300 miles / 500 km in a general northeast – southwest direction between the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula.
Edward Bransfield charted the South Shetland Islands and sailed across what is now known as The Bransfield Strait in January 1820, thus was Antarctica discovered.
The Bransfield Strait was named in about 1825 by James Weddell.
Edward Bransfield was born in Ballinacurra, County Cork, Ireland, in about 1785.
